What is IELTS?
IELTS is an internationally-recognised English language exam run by the British Council and Cambridge University. It lets you demonstrate that your English level is high enough if you’re planning to emigrate to, study or work in an English-speaking country like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or America. The exam tests your English reading, writing, listening and speaking ability. The certificate you’re awarded gives you a grade from 1-9.
What can I do to help?
I can tell you the best way to do each paper and help you practice. That includes the best strategies to use when doing the Listening and Reading papers. More difficult for many students are the Writing and Speaking parts of the exam. With Writing, I’ll show you how to write model answers that give you a top score and I’ll give you plenty of practice – essential if you want to do well. With Speaking, I’ll tell you how to respond to the questions asked – what to say and also what not to say! Practice is especially important here – you’ll have plenty with me.
How it works
Many students have already started practicing for the exam by themselves and only want help with the parts they find more challenging, like Writing and Speaking. That’s fine – we can focus on these. The Writing exam has two parts. In Task 1 you write a short report describing, for example, information on a chart. In Task 2 you write a longer essay that, for example, gives your opinion on a topic. I can tell you the different kinds of reports and essays that you might get, and how to write each one. The Speaking exam has three parts. I can tell you what each part involves and how best to answer the questions you’re asked – and crucially, I give you lots of practice in getting it right!
For students who are completely new to IELTS, I usually start by asking them to try a Reading and Listening paper, and see how well they do . Often students find these papers a little easier than the Writing and Speaking tasks. I tell you the best strategies to use when doing them and we analyse any problems you have with specific sections. Once we’re happy you can do these without too many problems, we can turn our attention to practising the Writing and Speaking tasks.
